Congress behind unending violence: Gujarat government

Sheela Bhatt in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Home Minister Gordhan Zadafia on Saturday blamed the Congress for the unending violence in the state.

"I know how many places Congress leaders have visited after [the attack on the Sabarmati Express in] Godhra. I know all about the meetings Congress leaders have held to continue the violence," he told rediff.com

After the riots between February 27 and March 4, the law and order situation in the state was slowly coming under control. But since the evening of March 15, stabbings and minor clashes have been reported every day.

"In Sabarkantha and Pratij they [Congress leaders] had held such meetings. In Ahmedabad, too, they called certain people. Fortunately, we came to know about these meetings," he added.

Narhari Amin, a Congress legislator from Ahmedabad, denied the allegations and said that the Narendra Modi government had failed to control the riots.

"These allegations are baseless. Modi is unable to contain the violence and is now trapped. He has been severely admonished by Prime Minister [Atal Bihari] Vajpayee and [Home Minister Lal Kishenchand] Advani in Delhi," he told rediff.com

"Now the PM is expected in Gujarat. Modi is worried and he is keen to see that the violence stops before the PM's visit," he said.

"We challenge the government to give proof. If any Congressman is found guilty, let it be Hindu or a Muslim, we will help in investigations against him," he added.
