Gujarat: Police open fire in Sarkhej

Indefinite curfew was imposed in Sarkhej near Ahmedabad following incidents of arson and stone pelting late on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.

Police fired five rounds and burst teargas shells to quell an unruly mob, which set fire to a hotel and a few shops in Sarkhej, outside the city, prompting authorities to clamp curfew in the area.

The army has been rushed to the town to help restore order, they said.

Meanwhile, a body of an unidentified man, cut into seven pieces, was recovered from a drain in Jamalpur area on Wednesday night, police said.

The situation in other curfew-bound areas in the walled city is peaceful and police said that the curfew in five police station areas was being relaxed in phases to enable women to buy essential commodities during the day.

Indefinite curfew continued in the worst-affected areas of Viramgam, Pranti Himatnagar while it was relaxed in Modasa town, Chhota Udepur, Jambusar, Borsad and Baroda city, police said.

Anand town also came under curfew on Wednesday night after two persons were stabbed near the town's bus stand leading to tension, they said.

Police burst teargas shells to disperse a crowd, which torched some vehicles and indulged in arson and stone pelting in the town, they said.

In Khambhat town, authorities imposed indefinite curfew from 2200 hours on Wednesday following some incidents of arson, police said, adding that security forces had to open fire to bring the situation under control.
