Police open fire on rampaging mob in Godhra

Police opened fire on Wednesday to disperse a mob, which went on the rampage in Godhra town, targeting people with firearms and stones, triggering fresh communal tension within two weeks of the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Godhra.

Police said the 500-strong mob attacked people in the Jahurpura area near the old bus stand forcing them to burst teargas shells and open fire.

There has been no report of any injury or casualty, they said.

Additional police forces and anti-riot Rapid Action Force personnel have been deployed in the area.

The situation is tense but under control, they said.
