UN human rights commissioner
concerned over Gujarat situation

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, now on a three-day visit to Pakistan, expressed concern over the recent communal violence in Gujarat and said she was closely observing efforts by Indian authorities to control the situation.

"I have been very concerned about the killings in Gujarat," she told Pakistan daily Dawn, shortly after her arrival in Islamabad from Afghanistan on Sunday night.

She said her presence in the region would help her to assess the situation and the response by the Indian government. "I will take the opportunity while I am in the region to closely see how it is being dealt with by the authorities in India," she was quoted as saying.

During her visit, Robinson would discuss the human rights situation in Pakistan with President Pervez Musharraf. The situation in Kashmir would also come up for discussion, she said.

Referring to the allegations of human rights violations in Kashmir, Robinson said she had been getting conflicting reports from both governments. "I am very clear that it's a human rights situation and it will be important for me to appraise this perspective, the extent of the human rights situation, extra-judicial killings, torture."
