Centre seeks report on Godhra carnage

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Union government has asked the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat to send a detailed report on the Godhra carnage which sparked off an orgy of communal violence in the state leaving over 600 people dead.

Talking to rediff.com on Friday, Minister of State for Home I D Swami said the Union government is in touch with the state administration round-the-clock.

"We have asked the state government to send a comprehensive report on the burning of two bogies of Sabarmati Express in Godhra on February 27," he said.

The minister described the situation in Gujarat as "under control" and said the Union government would take effective steps to see to it that such incidents are not repeated.

"We have to instil confidence amongst the people of the state. They need to be assured that their lives and properties are safe and secure. The Union government would do everything it can to ensure that such incidents are not repeated," Swami said.

Asked what kind of security his government can provide to the ordinary people when even houses belonging to two former judges of the Gujarat high court were not spared by the arsonists, Swami said that the government does not have full details of the two incidents. "But we have asked the state government to provide the necessary security to the judges and ensure their safety," he added.
