Kashmir a Palestine in the making: Musharraf

Warning that the Kashmir problem was "another Palestine in the making", Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has emphasised that the world must "understand the dangers of this region".

"I keep telling the United States and everyone: We must understand the dangers of this region. These dangers can only be averted if we resolve the Kashmir dispute. We must do that. Otherwise, there is another Palestine here in the making," Musharraf said in an interview to the Independent newspaper published on Monday.

"India," Musharraf said, "must negotiate... It needs to be resolved in a peaceful manner. But if the other side does not want to resolve it, then we are stuck again."

"Kashmir is a festering wound... We must resolve the Kashmir dispute, this is our stand even now," he said.

Musharraf denied that he decided to smother cross-border terrorism due to threats from US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage: "Not at all. We had a congenial and good interaction where he understood exactly our point of view. No, there has been no threat whatsoever. There was no question of a threat."

The daily said bitter mockery entered his voice when he spoke of the conciliatory steps taken by India. "Cosmetic," he said. "They are easing their own problems."
