RJD supports Kalam's candidature

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Thursday supported the candidature of A P J Abdul Kalam for the post of President.

RJD spokesman Shivanand Tiwari said the party had taken this line in view of its ally Congress' decision to support the scientist.

Sources in the RJD said the party decided to support Kalam keeping in view the support extended by Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and other groups.

Party chief Laloo Prasad Yadav had earlier supported a second term for President K R Narayanan. But after the President refused to stand for a second term, the RJD was in a fix.

Following the National Democratic Alliance's decision to support Kalam, RJD leaders held a meeting and finally decided to throw their weight behind the scientist.
