Issue of foreign monitors not
discussed: US

Deployment of foreign forces to monitor the Line of Control was not discussed during US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's talks with the Indian leadership, Indian and American sources said on Wednesday.

The clarification came in the wake of remarks attributed to Rumsfeld after his meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in New Delhi on Wednesday.

"We discussed a whole range of subjects and I guess the honest answer is yes. That subject did come up," the defence secretary said in response to a question, leading to some confusion among journalists as to which subject he was referring to.

The questioner had asked about putting sensors to monitor infiltration along the LoC, but some got the impression that the question also related to the deployment of foreign forces.

A US embassy spokesman confirmed that Rumsfeld's remarks related only to sensors.
