Orissa tightens security at vital installations

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

With the possibility of a war between India and Pakistan not entirely ruled out, the state government has tightened security at vital installations, Orissa Director General of Police N C Padhi said on Monday.

Orissa has about eight vital installations, including five related to the defence ministry.

These are the missile-launching centre at Chandipur (Balasore district), the ordinance factory at Saintala (Bolangir district), the MiG factory and the naval armament depot in Koraput district and the naval base at Chilika (Puri district), he said.

Other vital installations are the Hirakud dam (Sambalpur district), National Aluminium Company (Nalco) plant in Koraput district and the port located at Paradeep (Jagatsingpur district), he told rediff.com.

While the defense installations have their own security setup, the other installations are being guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), he said.

Since the Indo-Pak tensions began, general patrolling by the police has been intensified in these areas, Padhi said.

A high alert has been sounded all along the state's 480 km long coastline after the central government warned all states about the possibility of terrorists entering the country through the sea route in case of a war between India and Pakistan, he said.

The Orissa coastline is particularly vulnerable as it is not closely guarded, he said adding the Navy and the Coast Guard have intensified patrolling in the high seas to check infiltration.

The state government has asked fishermen to intimate them of any unusual activity near the coast, he said.
