AIADMK to support candidate named by Vajpayee

Ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu will support the candidate to be named by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the post of President, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said on Monday evening.

"I have agreed to support the candidate to be named by the prime minister who spoke to me this morning giving the name. It will not be proper on my part to reveal the name before the prime minister does it," she said.

Jayalalalithaa said prior to the May 31 bypoll, the prime minister had spoken to her indicating a name, but that name was not acceptable to her party. She, however, refused to reveal the identity of that individual. The executive of the AIADMK, which met on Monday, authorised her to take a decision on the choice of the presidential candidate.
