Two killed, eight hurt in Ahmedabad violence

Two persons, including an auto-rickshaw driver, were killed and eight injured in renewed violence in two police station areas of Ahmedabad on Monday, police said.

Mobs indulged in arson and stabbing, looted and set afire a dozen houses and shops in minority-dominated localities in curfew-bound Vejalpur police station area of Ahmedabad, police said.

Police opened fire and lobbed several teargas shells to disperse the violent mobs, they said.

One person, who received bullet injuries in Juhapura locality, succumbed to his wounds at the municipal hospital, they said.

The 50-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was stabbed when he was passing through the main road in Guptanagar locality in Vejalpur area on Monday noon, police said.

Indefinite curfew continued in Vejalpur police station area for the second day as fresh violence erupted on Sunday over detention of two persons in connection with criminal cases.

The violence had claimed one life and injured 30, eight in police firing.

However, life is normal in other parts of the city, police added.
