Two people were killed and three, including a woman, injured in Poonch district in continued Pakistani shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) since Friday evening, official sources said on Saturday.

They said two civilians were killed and an equal number injured in Balnoi area of the border district late on Friday evening in the shelling.

In Mandi area, one woman sustained splinter injuries and her house was damaged, they said.

Pakistani troops also targetted Sawjian, Gajrian and Poonch towns for about four hours from 1630 hrs IST with mortar shells and machine gun fire. However, there was no damage or casualty in these areas, they added.

Indian troops retaliated and there are reports that some damage has been caused on the other side, they said.

Reports from Kathua district said mortar shelling and intermittent exchange of fire were continuing in Hiranagar sector since Friday night. Heavy firing was also reported in the Noushera sector of Rajouri district, sources added.
