Presidential election on July 15

The election to choose a successor to President K R Narayanan, whose term is ending on July 24, will be held on July 15.

The counting of votes will take place on July 18.

"The Election Commission is mandated to ensure that the election to the office of the President of India, which is the highest elective office in the nation, must be free and fair and the Commission is taking all necessary steps for discharging its responsibility," Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh told reporters on Friday.

Announcing the poll schedule along with Election Commissioners T S Krishnamurthy and B B Tandon, the CEC said that the notification calling the election would be issued on June 11.

While the last date for filing of nominations is June 25, the nominations will be scrutinised the following day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature will be June 28.

The electoral college for the Presidential poll consists of elected members of both Houses of Parliament and elected members of the legislative assemblies of all states, including Delhi and Pondicherry.
