Washington to moot joint US-British patrol in J&K: Report

The United States is expected to propose a joint US-British monitoring force for Kashmir in its efforts to defuse tension between India and Pakistan, media reports said on Thursday.

Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will put forward the proposal for a "verification force" during his visit to New Delhi and Islamabad next week, The Independent daily quoted defence and diplomatic sources as saying.

Under the arrangement, helicopter-borne troops would be used to patrol the Line of Control, the report said.

According to diplomatic sources, around 500 soldiers would be needed for a verification mission and they would work with Indian and Pakistani security forces.
