US, Britain welcome Vajpayee's
proposal for joint patrolling

The United States of America and Britain have reacted positively to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's proposal for joint patrolling by India and Pakistan to check infiltration across the border in Jammu and Kashmir.

British Defence Minister Geoff Hoon told reporters in London after talks with his American counterpart, Donald Rumsfeld, that Vajpayee's proposal was an "encouraging sign."

In Washington, a State Department official said: "Vajpayee's proposal is a welcome sign that peaceful means of resolving their [India and Pakistan's] differences are being actively considered."

"We will support any mechanism agreed between the two countries that could help lower tensions," the official said.
