Exchange of artillery fire
with Pak continues in J&K

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Indian and Pakistani troops on Monday continued to exchange heavy artillery and mortar fire in Batalik, Kargil and Dras sectors, according to the Indian Army.

An army spokesman said Indian forces inflicted heavy damage on Pakistani posts and destroyed 13 bunkers on the other side of the Line of Control.

A Pakistani post opposite Sunderbani area was heavily shelled causing it to catch fire.

The spokesman said the Indian troops also carried out "retaliatory fire assaults" in Naushera, Rajouri and Poonch sectors.

Indian and Pakistani troops have been exchanging heavy fire along the International Border in Jammu and the Line of Control in Kashmir ever since the May 14 Kaluchak massacre.

Pakistan has also been retaliating with heavy fire. The Indian Army maintains that the Pakistani firing has been mostly targeted against civilian areas.

Over 100,000 people are believed to have migrated out of the border villages in Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistani shelling destroyed several Indian villages.

A senior army officer said on Friday last that the heavy Pakistani firing could also be a cover for militants to sneak in.
