Arms sales 'irrelevant' to Indo-Pak tensions: Straw

"No one believes the sales represented a point of pressure with either side," he told the BBC's Today programme.

Asked about current arms deals between British Aerospace Systems and India - including that of Sea Harrier and the Hawk aircraft - Straw said the government had not acted to stop any negotiations.

"Permission for the sale of Hawk jets to India will be sought only when negotiations are complete. There is no reason to force BAE to call off the talks," he said.

He said Britons have been urged to leave India and Pakistan as a 'precautionary' measure based on intelligence assessments.

He said that the situation was under constant review.
