Sri Lankan President Kumaratunga greets Kalam

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Thursday greeted President A P J Abdul Kalam on his assumption of office.

In a message extending her greetings and good wishes to the new President, she said the overwhelming mandate received by him from the electoral college was a clear reflection of the great confidence and trust placed in him by the people of India.

"You bring to this high office rich experience gained from a long and distinguished career in science and technology; profound knowledge of religious philosophies and cultural heritage of your country, as well as a passion for poetry and music," President Kumaratunga said.

She hoped traditional ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries would be further strengthened during Kalam's tenure.
