Gujarat issue forces adjournment of Parliament

Dissolution of the Gujarat assembly rocked Parliament on Monday, with an agitated opposition demanding the dismissal of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and imposition of President's rule in the state.

The issue forced the adjournment of both Houses for the day.

While the Rajya Sabha was adjourned by Chairman Krishan Kant amid uproarious scenes, the Lok Sabha witnessed nearly an hour-long slogan shouting by a combined opposition and later adjourned for the day.

The Lok Sabha was first adjourned for two hours by Speaker Manohar Joshi shortly after the Question Hour and Deputy Speaker P M Sayeed finally called it a day when the opposition showed no signs of relenting.

The turmoil continued throughout Question Hour with Joshi firmly refusing to yield to the opposition demand for suspension of the Question Hour.

Members of the Congress, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Left Parties, the Samajwadi Party and others stormed the well raising slogans 'we want 356 (imposition of President's rule under Article 356 of the Constitution)' and 'Modi hatao, desh bachao (Remove Modi, save the country)'.

It was a test of nerves between the Speaker and the charged opposition with Joshi going through the listed business disregarding the slogan-shouting.

When the House reassembled at 1400 hours after the first adjournment, the opposition kept up its chant forcing Sayeed to call it a day.

Similar opposition protests were witnessed in the Rajya Sabha where Kant first adjourned the House for an hour and later for the day as the uproar continued.
