Communal violence in Viramgam,
1 killed in police firing

At least one person was killed and 12 injured when police opened fire to control communal violence at a town near Ahmedabad on Friday night, police sources in Ahmedabad said.

At least eight of the injured sustained bullet wounds, the sources said.

Curfew was imposed in Viramgam town in Ahmedabad rural district when police fired bullets to disperse clashing groups after lobbing of tear gas shells failed to bring the situation under control.

The trouble began when youths from two different communities clashed at around 1830 hours IST.

As the standoff continued, the violence spread bringing in its grip more people from both sides, the sources said.

Authorities clamped curfew on the town at 2130 hours and the situation was stated to be tense but under control.
