National Democratic Alliance candidate A P J Abdul Kalam was ahead of his Left Front rival Colonel Lakshmi Sehgal at the end of the first round of counting for presidential election.
Counting of votes of ten states was completed by noon and the result showed that Kalam secured 1,490 votes as against 99 by Sehgal.
Barring the Left stronghold of Kerala, where Sehgal secured 39 votes against Kalam's 97, it was a clean sweep in all other states for the NDA nominee. Results showed Kalam secured 217 votes in Tamil Nadu, 264 each in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, 202 in Karnataka, 87 in Punjab, 130 in Orissa, 72 in Jammu and Kashmir, 74 in Jharkhand and 63 in Uttaranchal.
Sehgal got 10 votes in Tamil Nadu, two in Andhra Pradesh, nine in Maharashtra, 13 in Karnataka, four in Punjab, 12 in Orissa, two in Jammu and Kashmir, five in Jharkhand and three in Uttaranchal. The counting of votes began in New Delhi on Thursday morning amid tight security.
