Three militants killed at Banihal mosque, four more holed up inside

Security forces have so far gunned down three of a group of militants holed up in a mosque in Banihal town of Doda district, a police spokesman said in Jammu on Thursday.

The mosque is located on the highway at Banihal, the spokesman said adding vehicular traffic on both sides of the highway has been stopped since early Thursday morning.

The militants, estimated to be seven in number, had taken shelter in a house on Wednesday night.

They entered the nearby mosque after security forces, acting on a tip-off, cordoned off the locality and asked them to surrender.

The spokesman said the ultras then opened fire from the mosque forcing the forces to retaliate. The siege of the mosque is still on.

There has been no casualty among the security forces, the spokesman said.

The identity of the militants and the outfit they belong to was not yet known, he added.

The incident comes a day before the commencement of the month-long Amarnath pilgrimage. The convoys of pilgrims have to pass the Banihal area to reach the cave shrine in south Kashmir.
