Situation with India precarious: Pakistan

Two days after the gruesome killing of 27 people by terrorists near Jammu, Pakistan on Monday said tensions with India remained high and the situation 'precarious'.

"As long as such massive numbers (of Indian forces) are deployed along the border, tension will remain high," foreign office spokesman Aziz Ahmed Khan told reporters in Islamabad.

"There was for a moment slight reduction of tension, but now tension remains high and the situation remains precarious," he said.

He said the upcoming visits by senior Western officials were prompted by the 'international community's worry over the tension'.

British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, US Secretary of State Colin Powell and European Commission's Foreign Policy chief Javier Solana are scheduled to visit south Asia later this month.

Khan condemned the Qasim Nagar killings and restated Pakistan's demand for international observers along the Line of Control to verify Indian allegations of infiltration.

Asked to comment on reports that India was making defence-related purchases from Britain, Khan said, "They (purchases) do not go well for the security of the region. They promote tension in the region."
