Mufti Mohammad Sayeed sees conspiracy
behind Saturday's attack

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Former Union minister and chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party Mufti Mohammad Sayeed sees a conspiracy behind Saturday's attack on civilians in Jammu that left 27 people dead.

Condemning the incident, the Mufti said that the terrorists had of late been targeting the Jammu division of the state.

"Attack on innocent civilians in Jammu on Saturday night is a kind of incident which needs to be condemned. It has been done with the aim of creating communal divide between Hindus and Muslims in Jammu. Hapless women and children were made targets," he said.

The Mufti and his daughter, Mehbooba, are likely to visit the scene of the incident on Tuesday.

"We have a series of meetings [scheduled] in Jammu in Ranbir Singhpura and other places. These are election rallies of our party. We definitely plan to visit the victims of Saturday's attack," Mehbooba told rediff.com.

When asked if they planned to attend the Kashmir conference called by Gul Shah, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and chairman of the Awami National Conference, on July 18 in Srinagar, Mehbooba said her party had not been invited to the conference.

The father-daughter duo has had a series of meetings with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Minister of State for Home I D Swami during their week-long stay in Delhi.
