US needs to pressure Pak to stop support to terrorism: India

India on Monday night said that Washington needs to put more pressure on Pakistan to stop support to Muslim militant groups fighting in Jammu and Kashmir.

India's new Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal, said Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf was being allowed to 'play with ambiguities' after he pledged to act against militant groups.

"It is very important for the credibility of the international community that the commitments General Musharraf has given must be honoured by him...(they) cannot be watered down," Sibal, a career diplomat who last week assumed office as foreign secretary, told a conference on India-US ties.

Musharraf, under intense global pressure, pledged to end cross-border infiltration of militants into Kashmir.

Sibal said the international community should not argue that Musharraf may not be able to 'fully crush terrorist groups' based in Pakistan as he did not have 'full control over them'.

He said such 'ambiguities' could allow Pakistan to continue fomenting separatist violence in Kashmir and elsewhere in India.
