The government on Wednesday alleged that the funds for tehelka.com's 'Operation Westend' were supplied from West Asia and 'unknown persons immensely benefited' from the sting operation.
However, tehelka.com Managing Editor Tarun Tejpal denied the allegation.
Claiming that the sting operation was not a 'journalistic endeavour', but rather a 'commercial venture', Additional Solicitor General Kirit N Raval said the portal took benefit of the 'sensational' potential of the story to catch the attention of the public.
Raval, while cross-examining Tejpal for his financial status, said the tehelka.com Managing Editor had not been regular in filing his income tax returns during the time he was employed with Outlook newsmagazine.
Raval also accused Tejpal of being 'evasive about the true information regarding his earnings'.
Accusing Tejpal of deposing falsely, Raval said if not him, his representatives were involved in negotiations with Hindujas and that he was actively involved in day-to-day development of the story and knew every detail, including about call girls.
Denying the allegations, Tejpal said his former staffer in London was only involved in negotiations pertaining to the contents for a web site for Hindujas.
