Four persons were killed as violence rocked several parts of Gujarat during the day long Vishwa Hindu Parishad-sponsored bandh prompting the authorities to clamp indefinite curfew in Ahmedabad, Baroda, Lunawada and Himmatnagar towns.
The curfew remained in force in Godhra town for the second day with the situation described as tense, but under control.
Police fired in the air and used tear gas to disperse clashing mobs in Ahmedabad and some other areas during the bandh called to protest Wednesday's attack on a train at Godhra that left 58 people killed and 43 injured, most of them Karsevaks returning from Ayodhya.
The clashes followed attack on business establishments and a place of worship belonging to Muslims, police sources said.
Three persons were killed in Baroda, while another succumbed to stab injuries in Ahmedabad.
Incidents of stabbing, stone-pelting and arson were reported from towns of Baroda, Lunawada, Himmatnagar and Gandhinagar.
In Ahmedabad tension mounted as incidents of arson and violence were reported in Narol, Vatva, Naroda, C G Road and Shahibaug areas.
Several buses and a truck were set on fire by mobs. Around 6000 police have been deployed in various parts off the city to maintain peace.
