Vajpayee cancels Australia visit

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday cancelled his visit to Australia where he was to attend the Commonwealth Summit.

Vajpayee has asked External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh to lead the delegation at the summit beginning in Canberra on March 2, a spokesman of the prime minister's office said.

The cancellation came in the backdrop of tension building up in Ayodhya following the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's threat to go ahead with temple construction and the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Gujarat.
