People's Conference leaders file nominations

Two leaders of the People's Conference, headed by Sajjad Lone, the son of late Abdul Gani Lone, on Thursday filed nominations for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election.

Ghulam Mohiuddin Sofi and Abdul Haq Khan filed their nominations from Handwara and Lolab constituencies of Kupwara district, sources said.

On Thursday, ninety-six more candidates filed their papers from the 26 constituencies that will go to polls in the first phase on September 16. In all, 182 candidates are in the fray in these 26 constituencies.

Abdul Khaliq Haneef, former secretary of detained Jamaat-e-Islami leader and Hurriyat executive member Syed Ali Shah Geelani, filed his nomination papers as an independent on Wednesday to become the first separatist leader to join the fray after nearly 16 years.

Haneef, recently expelled from the Jamaat-e-Islami for his pro-poll stance, filed his nominations from Sonawari constituency of Baramulla.

He is pitted against counter-insurgent leader Mohammed Yousuf Parray alias Kuka Parray, who also filed his nomination on Wednesday.

With National Conference candidate Mohammed Akbar Lone also in the fray, the contest is likely to be keen.

Ghulam Rasool Shah, a former divisional commander of the pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen, has filed his nomination as an independent from Lolab constituency.
