Ten new faces in NC list for first phase of J&K poll

The ruling National Conference on Thursday released its list of candidates for the first phase of election on September 16 to be held in 26 assembly constituencies, which fall in the districts of Kupwara, Baramulla, Leh, Kargil, Rajouri and Poonch.

The 26-member list has ten new faces.

A statement issued by the party in Srinagar said a high-power central board comprising the Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Shah, the housing minister, Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, general secretary of the party and other members cleared the names.

Sharief-ud-Din Shariq will be the candidate from Langate in Baramulla, while Javed Hussain Shah will fight from Bandipore.

Shah is a former top pro-India militant leader who surrendered and later formed his own counter-insurgency outfit to fight the militants in Kashmir. He later joined the NC.

According to the Election Commission notification, the last date for filing nomination papers has been fixed as August 29. The scrutiny of nomination papers would be done on August 31 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed as September 2.
