Centre fails to file report to NHRC on Gujarat violence

The Centre on Tuesday failed to keep its promise of filing a report on the violence in Gujarat to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) even as the report filed by the state government on the violence does not contain the 'full details'.

The Centre, which had filed an interim report last week, had sought time till Tuesday to file a comprehensive report stating that they needed time to gather information from various ministries regarding Gujarat, the NHRC sources said.

Meanwhile, the sources said the 'comprehensive' report by the Gujarat government lacks 'full details'.

While releasing its preliminary comments on the riots and its recommendations on April one, the NHRC had asked both the Centre and the state to respond within two weeks 'to enable further consideration of this matter by the commission without any avoidable delay'.

The commission had accused Gujarat government of failing to take action leading to violence in the state and asked it to entrust investigation of 'critical cases' of violence to the CBI and establish special courts to try the culprits.

The state government had rejected the suggestions.
