Gulshan killer gets lifer,
convicted on five counts

Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant, held guilty for the murder of cassette king Gulshan Kumar, was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a Bombay court.

Sessions Judge M L Tahilyani sentenced Abdul Rauf to jail terms ranging from three years to life on five counts. All sentences would run concurrently.

The accused, donning a white cap, was smiling when the sentence was pronounced. His wife and two minor children were present in the court.

The judge said he was not imposing death penalty on the convict because the prosecution had failed to prove that he was a contract killer.
