Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday accused the National Democratic Alliance government of "desperately trying to shield a chief minister [Narendra Modi] ignoring the public outcry".
Addressing a large public meeting in Anantapur, south Andhra Pradesh, the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha made a passing reference to the situation in Gujarat and lashed out at the NDA for trying to "save an erring chief minister".
"The land of Mahatma Gandhi is in the grip of a communal conflagration for the last two months," she said. "It is causing concern to the entire nation. We cannot afford to lower our image in our own eyes."
She also charged the Telugu Desam Party and the NDA governments with failing to respond to people's aspirations. "Both the TDP government here and the BJP-led coalition at the Centre have failed to fulfil their responsibilities to the people," she said. "Ever since they took over the reins, the miseries of farmers have aggravated."
Launching a tirade against the BJP leadership, she said, "The same set of people had lectured us on political morality before the elections. But morality should be reflected in actions, not merely in words."
