Voting to follow Gujarat debate in Rajya Sabha too

The opposition censure motion on the Gujarat situation was on Wednesday admitted for discussion and voting in the Rajya Sabha, ending the seven-day impasse in the House.

The notice of the motion was admitted under Rule 170, which entails voting at the end of the discussion, Chairman Krishan Kant said in his ruling.

The motion will be taken up on May two.

The notice of the motion given by the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Manmohan Singh and others read - "This House expresses its deep anguish over the incidents in Gujarat and asks the Centre to effectively intervene and provide rehabilitation to those affected in the riots in the state."

Six weeks of violence in the state has caused immense damage and loss of lives, and people in the state should be protected by the Centre under Article 355, it said.

The admission of the motion came at the end of seven days of acrimonious scenes over the Gujarat incidents with the opposition demanding removal of Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The House could not take up any legislative business during the period with even key NDA allies like the TDP expressing concern over the situation in the state.
