Toll rises to 29 in renewed violence, curfew continues

Two persons were stabbed to death in Ahmedabad on Monday night taking the toll in the renewed violence in Gujarat since Sunday to 29, police said on Tuesday.

Two persons were stabbed in Shahpur area, police said adding Shahpur and Behrampur areas were rocked by violence on Monday prompting the police to open fire in which six persons, including a woman, were killed.

Some miscreants tried to provoke people in Khanpur and Mirzapur localities of Shahpur area, which led to panic amongst the residents, they said.

The situation in Shahpur is under control now, police said.

A total of 27 persons were killed, many in police firing, and over 150 people injured in the orgy of violence since Sunday in Ahmedabad, at Kadi in Mehsana district, Kapadvanj and Mehmdabad in Kheda district, they said.

Indefinite curfew continued in Gomtipur, Rakhyal and Bapunagar areas of Ahmedabad for the third day on Tuesday, police said adding curfew continued in other areas in the walled city as a precautionary measure.

The army has been deployed in all sensitive areas of the walled city. Two more companies of the Rapid Action Force and the Central Industrial Security Force were deployed in violence-affected areas of the city on Monday.
