Cops responsible for Sunday's killings: Muslim leaders

Muslim leaders on Monday said policemen should be withdrawn from the minority-dominated localities of Ahmedabad and replaced with army or the Rapid Action Force.

The said that the police was responsible for the killings in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

All Indian Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat president Syed Shahbuddin said: "The AIMMM is shocked and anguished by the unacceptable police action against the long-suffering Muslim community yesterday and holds Gujarat government and its trigger-happy police wholly responsible for the loss of human lives in the barbaric attack."

"The AIMMM considers that the stabbing of one policeman for alleged misconduct cannot and should not justify the invasion of a whole locality by the police force, especially when it is known to have an anti-Muslim mindset, as borne by the fact that many victims were shot dead at point-blank range...," he said.

The Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, said: "Till now police were supporting and assisting rioters and encouraging them to destroy lives and properties of Muslims in its supervision. But this incident proves that police have now become rioters themselves."

Shahbuddin said the police personnel involved, who could be easily identified, should be immediately suspended and charged with murder.

They also reiterated their demand for removal of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and imposition of President's rule in the state.
