Parliament logjam continues, both Houses adjourn for the day

The deadlock over the Gujarat issue continued to paralyse Parliament for the sixth day on Monday with an agitated opposition forcing adjournment of both Houses within minutes of their assembling.

Members from the Congress, Left parties, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Muslim League stormed the well of the Lok Sabha protesting renewed killings in Gujarat and made a strong plea for a discussion under Rule 184, which entails voting.

Ruling BJP members countered the opposition onslaught with some slogans of their own.

As charges and counter-charges were traded by the opposition and ruling benches, TDP leader K Yerran Naidu sought to make a statement on the Gujarat issue. The TDP, which has demanded removal of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, has not taken any particular stand regarding a discussion on the situation in the state.

As repeated pleas to restore calm fell on deaf ears, Sayeed adjourned the House for the day without transaction of any business.

In the Rajya Sabha, the opposition led by the Congress insisted that a sense of insecurity continued to prevail in Gujarat and that Modi should be removed.

Congress member Suresh Pachauri said people were still being killed in Gujarat and the tension was affecting children who were in the process of taking their annual examinations.

BJP member S S Ahluwalia countered that a lot of money was being wasted due to disruption of the House.

Chairman Krishan Kant plea that the members should stick to Question Hour did not have any impact.

Sensing the unrelenting mood of the opposition, Kant adjourned the House for the day.

Later, CPI-M leader Somnath Chatterjee met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and discussed the strategy to be adopted by the opposition parties in the wake of the deadlock in Parliament over the Gujarat issue.
