21 Bangladeshi nationals deported from Orissa

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

At least 21 Bangladeshi nationals who were staying illegally in remote tribal villages in Orissa's Nawrangpur district were deported to their country, District Collector Arabinda Padhi said on Monday.

They were handed over to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Diberia check post in West Bengal who handed them over to Bangladesh authorities, he said.

The district administration has formed a special squad to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, Padhi said.

It raided several places last Thursday in this connection and detained 13 persons in Raighar, eight persons in Umarkot and six persons in Dabugaon, he said.

The administration had identified about 108 Bangladeshi nationals staying in Nawrangpur district without valid legal papers. They have been served orders to vacate the country, he said.

Many of them have appealed against the orders in courts, he said.
