NDA is not a divided house: PM

Asserting that the National Democratic Alliance is fully united on the Gujarat issue, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday attacked the opposition for projecting it as 'a divided house'

He said that the current impasse over the demand for a discussion in Parliament on the incidents in Gujarat has reached a 'ridiculous level'.

"Members have the right to give their viewpoint. But differences are only on the rules under which they should be held and the differences have reached a ridiculous level," Vajpayee told a conference on the role of voluntary sector in national development in New Delhi.

"The ruling alliance has no differences and the opposition needs to play a constructive role," he said.

He added that he had already condemned the Gujarat incidents in the strongest terms.

"My description about the Gujarat incident has also raised a debate," the prime minister said adding the incident has put 'us to shame'.

Vajpayee said the founding fathers of the Constitution had laid down the foundation for a secular fabric and not a 'theocratic country'.

Vajpayee also assured Nasif Banot, the head of a voluntary group in Gujarat, that the government is providing all assistance to the state.
