Fernandes reviews army deployment in Gujarat

Defence Minister George Fernandes, on a four-day 'healing mission' to Gujarat, held discussions with Chief Minister Narendra Modi and senior army and civil officials to review deployment of army in violence affected areas of the city and other part state.

The meeting on Thursday night remained inconclusive, official sources said on Friday.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Ashok Narayan was present at the meeting.

During his tour of the state, the third since communal violence broke out, Fernandes is scheduled to meet public leaders of various communities and also visit riot-affected areas of Mehsana, Godhra, Baroda, Surat and Kutch regions during the next two days, they added.

The visit of Fernandes assumes significance in the light of the fact that he is also the NDA convenor and several key allies are still mounting pressure on the Centre for removal of Modi --which BJP had strongly rejected.
