Fernandes to visit Gujarat

Union Defence Minister George Fernandes is undertaking a four-day 'healing mission' in Gujarat, beginning Thursday and would review as to how long the army's presence is required in the riot-hit state.

During his tour in Gujarat, the third since the riots broke out after the February 27 Godhra massacre, he would visit people from various communities and make efforts to form a 'core group', which would work towards ushering in lasting peace and normalcy.

"I have been in touch with people from various communities in Gujarat and my first effort will be to establish a core group of people who will interact among the communities and work towards bringing harmony in the violence-affected areas," Fernandes said.

Observing that he has consulted Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani about his tour, Fernandes said he would take the opportunity to look at the relief and rehabilitation work done by various agencies including the army.

"I will see for how much more time it may be necessary for the army to be kept there," Fernandes said.

He would be visiting Ahmedabad, Godhra, Mehsana, Baroda, Surat and Kutch.
