National Commission for Minorities postpones visit to Gujarat

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The National Commission for Minorities has postponed its visit to Gujarat, scheduled for April 17 and April 18, to take stock of the law and order situation.

Speaking to rediff.com Vice Chairman of NCM, Tarlochan Singh, said, "We have decided to postpone our visit to the state for the time being in view of the fact that some of the areas in Ahmedabad are still under curfew."

The Commission led by Justice Mohammad Shamim was scheduled to visit Ahmedabad to have one-on-one talks with all sections of the society, particularly the Muslims, living in various camps in Ahmedabad.

Clarifying that the Commission did not postpone the visit at the request of the state government, Singh said, "We postponed the visit on the request of the people living in the camps. Since the curfew is in force in certain areas that we intended to visit, people would not be able to come out and meet the members of the commission."

He also said that the Commission would submit its report only after it has heard the version of the people living in the camps.

The commission had called the top brass of Gujarat administration led by its Chief Secretary G Subba Rao on April 6 for a meeting to explain in detail what action the state administration has taken against police officers who had allegedly aided and abetted rioters.
