Gujarat govt files report to NHRC, Centre yet to do so

Following a severe indictment by it for 'failing' to take action leading to communal riots in the state, Gujarat government on Monday filed its response to the National Human Rights Commission's preliminary comments and recommendations.

However, a response was awaited from the Centre.

"We have received a report from the Gujarat government today, but we are yet to receive the response from the home ministry. We are sending a reminder to them," the NHRC sources said.

The NHRC had asked for a response within two weeks 'to enable further consideration of this matter by the Commission without any avoidable delay'.

While releasing its report on April 1, the Commission had accused the Gujarat government of failing to take action leading to communal riots in the state and asked it to entrust investigation of 'critical cases' of violence to CBI and establish special courts to try them.

However, the state government's report is not expected to be discussed in the Commission immediately with NHRC Chairman J S Verma away to Geneva for a UN conference.

"We will inform the chairman about the report and if he wants it to be faxed there, we will do so," the sources said.
