Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is understood to have told the concluding session of the BJP national executive committee meeting in Goa on Sunday that a decision on Uttar Pradesh would be taken soon.
The TDP is unhappy with the BJP for its continued defence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi issue in the face of all round criticism for his non-performance while Gujarat was hit by violence.
Significantly, BSP supremo Kanshi Ram's on Saturday said that his party was prepared to support the NDA government at the Centre if the BJP backed Mayawati as chief minister in Uttar Pradesh, which is now under President's rule.
BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy, at his news conference at the conclusion of the executive meeting, said that the issue did not come up for discussion.
He reiterated the BJP's decision to sit in the opposition in the aftermath of the setback in Uttar Pradesh.
However, Krishnamurthy did not entirely rule out the possibility of an alliance with the BSP either.
