Hailstorm injures hundreds in Orissa

Giridhar Gopal in Bhubaneswar

A hailstorm, which hit the district headquarters of Angul, Orissa, and its surroundings villages on Thursday afternoon, injured hundreds of people, damaged thatched houses and uprooted thousands of trees, the Officer-in-charge of the State Revenue Control Room, Achyutananda Pani, said on Friday.

The injured were undergoing treatment, he told rediff.com, adding that some of the hailstones weighed at least one kg.

The district administration had started relief operation in several places, he said.

Telecom and power distribution systems were paralysed in several places.
