The Telugu Desam Party, a key ally of the National Democratic Alliance government, has demanded the immediate ouster of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, holding him responsible for the communal carnage in that state.
The TDP held its politburo meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday night and adopted a resolution asking the Bharatiya Janata Party to effect an immediate change of leadership in Gujarat.
The TDP also severely criticised Narendra Modi's handling of the communal violence over the last six weeks, saying that the administration and leadership in Gujarat have failed miserably, in impartially and effectively discharging their responsibilities in quelling violence, and also in providing relief and rehabilitation to the victims.
Saying that 'secularism is one of the fundamental tenets of the philosophy of Telugu Desam Party', the resolution said, "The recent developments in Gujarat have been a matter of grave concern, and have tarnished India's image of being a liberal, modern and secular society. The tragic events marked by sustained communal violence threaten to undo the secular fabric of our country."
"The TDP demands the BJP to immediately effect a change of leadership in Gujarat. Unless this is done, we will be guilty of eroding public confidence and failing to provide just and fair governance to the citizens of our country. What is important at this juncture is to provide a healing touch and restore public confidence in the institutions of governance," the resolution added.
