BJP national executive meet to discuss Gujarat riots

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday dismissed speculation that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's fate would be decided at the party's national executive meeting scheduled in Goa this week.

"Why does the national executive need to discuss Modi issue? Such decisions can be taken even in Delhi," Sharad Kulkarni, Maharashtra BJP leader coordinating the meeting preparations in Goa, told rediff.com.

Around 173 leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, party president Jana Krishnamurthy, 25 Union ministers and chief ministers of Gujarat, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Goa will attend the three-day meeting, beginning from April 12.

Kulkarni, however, admitted that the ongoing violence in Gujarat would be the focal debating point at the meeting.

He said that the fallout of the March 15 shila daan at Ayodhya, the passage of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, the party's debacle in the recent assembly polls in four states would also be discussed.

The detailed agenda will be finalised in Delhi on Tuesday, Kulkarni said.

The three-day event, which will begin at Hotel Marriott Resort in Panaji with the office bearers' meeting on Friday morning, will conclude on Sunday.
