One stabbed, arson in Ahmedabad, night curfew continues

Barring a stabbing incident, which left one person injured, and stray arson and violence in Ahmedabad, riot-torn Gujarat was on Sunday peaceful even as night curfew remained in force in several parts of the state.

One person was stabbed and injured at the Odhav police station area while stray incidents of arson were reported from Madhupura and Jamalpur areas.

Night curfew continued in nine police station areas of Kalupur, Dariyapur, Shahpur, Vejalpur, Gomtipur, Karanj, Haveli, Madhupura and Danilimda, police said.

While curfew was lifted from Vatva and Sabarmati areas, it continued in Gomtipur area with a four-hour relaxation during the day for women and children to buy essential goods, police said.

Many places in south, central and north Gujarat areas continued to remain under curfew at night, they said.

In Baroda, apart from a stabbing incident during the curfew relaxation period, the situation remained peaceful through out the day, police said.

City Police Commissioner Dindayal Tuteja said that those involved in the incident, reported from the Bavamanpura locality, have been identified and will be arrested soon.

Indefinite curfew continued in Visnagar town in Mehsana district, they said. Curfew was imposed following the killing of a man by a mob on Saturday.

The situation in various parts of the state was under control and no untoward incident was reported during the gram panchayat elections, police sources said.
