Modi a millstone around Gujarat's neck: Congress

The Congress party on Friday said that normalcy cannot be restored in Gujarat as long as Narendra Modi remained as chief minister and doubted whether Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee can do 'right things'.

"Modi is a millstone around the neck of Gujarat and the prime minister knows it. We do not know whether Vajpayee is capable of addressing this problem. Whenever, we doubt his capability, he loses his temper," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said in New Delhi.

Asked about Vajpayee rejecting the possibility of change of leadership in the state, he said, "Here is a Prime Minister who is talking about doing right things, but is incapable of doing right things."

Questioning the continuation of Modi as chief minister of the state, Reddy said that normalcy cannot be restored in the 'heart of Gujarat' with Modi leading the government.

Dissatisfied over Vajpayee's 'defensive' explanation on his delayed visit to Gujarat, Reddy said that it (explanation) betrayed the lack of will on his part to restore semblance of normalcy in the state.

"The defensive explanation offered by Vajpayee on his delayed visit to Gujarat has not carried conviction of the people. The delay of six weeks is extraordinary by any standards. It only betrays the lack of will on his part to restore semblance of normalcy in the state," he said.
