The Orissa government has banned the use of recycled plastic in four of the state's major tourist attractions, special secretary in the forest and environment department B K Patnaik said on Thursday.
The areas are the Jagannath temple at Puri, Konark temple at Konark, the Nandankanan wildlife park at Bhubaneswar and the Bhitarkanika sanctuary in Kendrapada district. The ban is effective since the 1st of April, he said.
The state pollution control board had recommended imposition of the ban in about 20 places as indiscriminate discarding of plastic bags in sanctuaries and reserve forests had been posing a threat to the flora and fauna.
The Orissa High Court had recently directed the state government to strictly enforce the Recycled Plastics Manufacture and Usage rules, 1999, Patnaik told rediff.com.
